St Petersburg - Whitted (SPG)

St Petersburg – Whitted is the closest airfield for a number of attractions around St Petersburg including the Museum of History, the Salvador Dali Museum and, of course, the pier.
The St Petersburg Museum of History has a number of exhibits covering the early European settlements, the railroad era, the Victorian era, the growth of tourism, the Great Depression, and the revival of tourism since World War II. Perhaps of more interest to pilots is a special display covering the growth of commercial aviation.
The Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1.00 p.m. until 5.00 p.m. For further information telephone ++ (813) 894 1052
The Salvador Dali Museum is home to the world’s most extensive collection of this artist’s work. Some estimates place the value of the collection at more than $125m. The collection contains in excess of 90 oil paintings, 100 water colours and drawings, together with some 1,300 other exhibits including graphics, sculptures, photographs, and even floor to ceiling murals. If you are an admirer of this artist’s work, this is the place to visit.
The Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 5.30 p.m. You can telephone the Museum on ++ (813) 823 3767 for further information.
The Pier is a distinctive landmark, resembling an upside down pyramid. Inside there is a wide range of shops and restaurants and it is a good place to enjoy the scenery whilst you have something to eat. In actual fact, if you eat at the restaurant on top of the pier you can enjoy an excellent view of the airfield.
All of these attractions are within easy walking distance of the airfield but alternatively, if you do require transport, the staff in the FBO are very friendly and will arrange this for you.

Please note that following the tragic events of 11 September many of the FAA requirements to obtain a Certificate based on the UK Licence have changed. Please check the FAA website for up-to-date guidance.
Unfortunately my book is now out of print with Seager Publishing and Flyer Magazine and I am currently working on a complete update to be published in due course. If you do find that any of the details in this guide are incorrect I would welcome your feedback to ensure that the next revision is as up to date as possible.
